On Sunday we had the opportunity to visit the capitaleof Portugal Lisbon
Students have to go to visit the famous places in this beautiful city. First we went and visited the Cathedral build from the twelfth century and is predominantly Romanesque in style. Its official name is Santa Maria Maior. It has survived several natural disasters, like the great earthquake of 1755.
Then we went up to São Jorge Castle with its eleven towers is one of Lisbon’s most emblematic landmarks. The Castle reached its maximum splendour during the thirteenth century and lasted until the sixteenth century when it was occupied by both the Kings of Portugal and the Bishop. We continued with the visit of Belem, this neighbourhood is located at the mouth of the River Tagus. Portugal’s various explorers set sail from this part of town to other parts of the world and brought back riches and their many discoveries. Many monuments are in this quarter. The first is Jerónimos Monastery and the second is Belém Tower. In addition, we enjoyed exploring the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrãodos Descobrimentos), the Ponte 25 de Abril and the National Coach Museum. We got inside the monastery to conclude a perfect day.
