SMESP19 Humanity- Barcelona- Gothic District

A history teacher from Marti Dot school guided the group through the Barri Gotic, which is the main historic district in Barcelona.  It includes the remains of the city’s Roman wall and several notable medieval landmarks.

The students were given explanations about the different monuments and the historic events connected with them.  

Walking through the labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares, they were able to see the different stages of the growth of the city, from the Roman Barcino to the present time. They were made to recognise the different types of architecture, either original or recent copies or reconstruction. They were told about the local legends related to some of them, too.. The history teacher also focused on the scars left in the district by the Spanish Civil War  On Plaça St Jaume, where the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya stands, they were made aware of the present situation and the troubled period  in Catalonia. They were asked to answer questions about the visit and fill in a small questionnaire.

The students were really interested and participated actively in the visit. They learnt a lot about the history of Barcelona and improved their general knowledge. As all the comments were in English, they also improved their foreign language skills. They shared their impressions with their foreign partners.

They wrote reports and made small videos that they will present to the parents, teachers and students from the school during the Erasmus Days.
