First, students discovered museum in salt in Turda. Aguide explained to international students how to extract salt andits works.
The gallery is 917 meters and was created between 1863 and 1871. The main problem was to facilitate the transportation of the salt from the deep. When students went down 300m of salt was all around and the deep was 1 kilometre. In 1932 the mine Was closed. During the 2nde world war it was used for anti aircraft Shooter. After this period the first 500m were used for local cheeses. Students spent time to observe from the balcony. The connection between the surface and the inside of the mine is made through two shaftsdesigned to provide access for the salt cutters and ensure ventilation and a way to remove the salt.
In the galleria Franz Josef we spent time in a chamber closed with a beautiful echo that we can hear x25. Pupils played with the Word « salt echo and Erasmus » and it was very funny! Next chamber was the trolley room built in 1881 to extract the salt.
Horses turn around the machine and the 4 wood arms were used like elevator.
The model shows how it works. Workers put salt in the wagons and the trolley used by horses do the job to extract from underground to the platform ground 0. The shaft is around 90 meters deep. A chapel was built at this level.
The oldest chamber is the Teresa mine. It looks like a bell. Exploitation began in 1690 and ended in 1880. An underground lake (8m deep) was formed with a salt island. The base of mine is 112m below the surface.
The place is now really original with many activities inside the mine downstairs: ping pong, pool, panoramic wheel…
Then, students took advantage of the site and some rowing a boat around a lake…
This visit allows to the students, create a link between them, sharing a moment of freindship. But the best was to discoverhow to work a salt extraction plant. Very interesting for most of them who didn’t imagine that could exist.
